Dog Food Flavored Jellybean?

Last weekend, my family and I decided to see Alice in Wonderland in 3D.
We got to the Edwardsville theater an hour early because I’d heard how popular the movie is. Apparently, it’s more popular than I thought. The 2:30 PM showing was sold out!

We’ll, what are we going to do for the next three hours? My mom’s friend suggested we visit some shops in Glen Carbon.

Dad and I looked at each other and agreed we’ll just have to bear with it.

We went to a store named Miss Bailey’s Poppy Patch. My mom loved it. It was full of Mom stuff you hang on the walls. You know, flowers, plates and stuff. Not a lot of things for me to look at but there is a play area for little kids younger than me.

A couple doors down there’s a great little candy shop. Dad says it’s just like an old time candy store. Sweeties is loaded with candy. Stuff I’d never seen before. Mostly fancy chocolates I think. Have you ever tasted a dog food flavored jelly bean?

We left the candy shop and tried to drag mom out of Miss Bailey’s. The nice lady who works there recommended a new pizza place for lunch.

Peel is the name of the restaurant. They serve Pizza from an 800° Wood Fired Oven. We almost passed it up because it is hidden behind a bank. It’s located in the Park at Plum Creek off of Route 159, just south of downtown Edwardsville.

Inside, right as you walk in, there is a bar. I looked at some of the beer names and only recognized a few.

Our waitress was very nice.

The walls were yellow, blue, and orange. The ceiling was open and you could see the pipes and vents. It’s very cool.

We ordered two appetizers that I couldn’t pronounce. One looked like a calzone (or so Dad said) cut up into slices with three different dips. One was so good that I wanted to drink it through a straw. The other looked like a garlic, cheese bread.

For an entree, I ordered the Thai Red Curry pizza. It is Wood fired chicken, red curry, mozzarella cheese, shredded carrots, cucumber, fresh cilantro, and roasted peanuts. It was excellent, but hot.

I asked the waitress, “What is a peel?” She said that it is the tool used to grab the pizza from within the oven.

I got to talk with the owners, Patrick and Brandon. They opened their restaurant this past December. The restaurant is doing well and they are happy. I extremely recommend it. To see more about Peel visit their website.

Mama Thayer says she definitely wants to go back. She saw Bagna Cauda on the menu. I’m not sure what it is but Mom says her family used to make it and she’d never seen it on a restaurant menu.

She also saw Nutella S’mores Pizza for dessert. Mom said that is genius.

After all this, we finally made it to the movie. Personally, didn’t like Alice In Wonderland. It being in 3D, I was expecting a lot more. The costumes and special effects were cool, but it just wasn’t a very good movie and it was too long. (official trailer)

We ended the night on a high note. We stopped by Culver’s. Typically I order a Butter Burger but I was so full from all the pizza, I could only eat a large Vanilla, Whipped Cream and Cookie Dough Concrete Mixer. Yum!

Speaking of movies, Thanks to Cameron B. from East Alton. He writes: I went last Friday to see a great movie with my mom. The movie was G-Force, best thing about the show was that it was free. The Nazarene Community Center in Roxana has a couple more free movies playing in April and May. Those movies are “Old Dogs” and “The Tooth Fairy”. They also have all popcorn, soda, and candy for just a $1 each. These movies are a great way to spend time with your family, and not have to spend a lot. My mom loves taking me and a couple of my friends each month. The movies play at the old Roxana Movie Theater on Rt.111.

As always, I’m always looking for something interesting to do or learn. If you have done something interesting lately, let me know. I may mention it in an upcoming issue.
